Heavy reliance on AI tools like ChatGPT and others can adversely impact cognitive functions. MIT’s viral paper “Your Brain on ChatGPT: Accumulation of Cognitive Debt when Using an AI Assistant for Essay Writing Task” offered substantial evidence on how the AI tools can be detrimental for developing brains that would clutch to chatbots like crutches.
Earlier a paper by Microsoft and Carnegie Mellon University showed that while AI “can improve efficiency, it may also reduce critical engagement, particularly in routine or lower-stakes tasks in which users simply rely on AI, raising concerns about long-term reliance and diminished independent problem-solving.”
So what does Nvidia’s billionaire boss Jensen Huang opine about the study? Nvidia is the largest supplier for major AI firms, including Meta, OpenAI, and other rivals. He stated in his interview with Farid Zakaria of CNN,
“I have to admit, I’m using AI literally every single day. And, and, um, I think my cognitive skills are actually advancing.”
He also remarked that he wasn’t deploying AI to think for him; instead,
I’m asking it to teach me things that I don’t know. Or help me solve problems that I otherwise wouldn’t be able to solve reasonably.”
Huang, however, admitted to not yet seeing the MIT paper.
