American Airlines flight 2201 flying from Los Angeles to New York had to be diverted to Phoenix due to a bizarre emergency that was officially dubbed ‘medical needs of a customer.’ As shared on TikTok by a fellow passenger, two girls spotted lice on a woman’s hair during the flight. The panic-stricken girls alerted the crew when they saw the bugs crawling out of her hair. The flight was immediately diverted, with minimal information provided to the passengers. The passenger who was recording the ordeal on TikTok stated that none of the passengers looked like they were freaking out. As soon as the flight landed, the lice-ridden woman was rushed to the emergency .

Meanwhile, the passengers were provided vouchers for hotel stay due to a 12 hour delay. The vouchers were mailed to the passengers, informing them that the flight had been delayed due to a medical emergency. This is not the first instance of grounding the flight owing to lice infestation. A family flying Delta Airlines from Paris to Nashville via Minneapolis in 2017 could not board during the last leg of their flight as their 6-year-old son started scratching his head while waiting to use the restroom. His mother checked and confirmed that it was lice. Commotion ensued. The family was grounded and subjected to medical tests. While there’s no policy for lice infestation, the CDC states that head lice don’t transmit disease.
