In the last 15 years, the Chennai Port Authority (ChPA) has earned nearly ₹500 crore from Hyundai Motor India Ltd, one of the anchor clients, for exporting cars through the Chennai port, according to data sourced from ChPA.
The revenue comprises vessel-related charges and cargo-related charges like wharfage and demurrage, ChPA sources said.
Over the last 25 years, through a strategic MoU with the Chennai Port Authority, HMIL has exported passenger vehicles to over 150 countries across the globe and currently exports to over 60 countries with 9 tailormade models including the Hyundai CRETA, CRETA Electric, ALCAZAR, EXTER, VENUE, AURA, VERNA, Grand i10 NIOS and i20. However, revenue data is available only for the last 15 years.
S. Kirupanandasamy, Traffic Manager, ChPA, said that the Korean auto major has been provided with a dedicated holding facility for Hyundai cars. It includes a parking and inspection area with a capacity to accommodate over 4,000 units .
Commencing exports in 1999, from Chennai port, HMIL has exported over 3.7 million Made in India passenger vehicles to over 150 countries and currently exports to over 60 countries, with 9 tailor made products. It recently commenced exports of the CRETA Electric to neighbouring markets.
Hyundai exported a total of 1,63,386 units in FY 2024-2025 with countries like Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Mexico, Chile and Peru being the top export markets, the company said in a recent release.
Unsoo Kim, Managing Director, HMIL, said for FY26 the company anticipates the growth in export volumes to be around 7~8 per cent, supported by robust demand in the emerging markets.
