Apple first introduced the Watch SE in 2020, followed by a second-generation model in 2022 with 1.57-inch and 1.73-inch display options. Now, a new report suggests that Apple is developing the Watch SE 3, which is expected to feature slightly larger 1.6-inch and 1.8-inch displays—hinting at a possible design refresh and screen size upgrade for the budget-friendly smartwatch.

According to analyst Ross Young via 9to5Mac, Apple has begun production of the Apple Watch SE 3’s displays, which will come in 1.6-inch and 1.8-inch sizes—only slightly larger than the current SE 2 models, suggesting minimal display changes. However, Apple may pair these screens with a redesigned, slimmer chassis, potentially aligning more closely with the 38mm and 42mm size options of older Apple Watch models.

The SE line has historically adopted design elements from previous flagship Series watches, and the SE 3 may follow suit by resembling either the Series 7 or the more recent Series 9. While earlier reports hinted that Apple could switch from aluminum to a plastic frame to lower costs, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that the cost-effectiveness of this change is under scrutiny, and Apple may stick with the aluminum body for now.

On the software front, the Apple Watch SE 3 is expected to launch with watchOS 12, which will bring performance improvements and potentially a redesigned interface inspired by visionOS. These updates are aimed at enhancing user experience and functionality across the board.
The new SE model may also see improvements in health tracking, an area where previous SE watches have lagged behind. While it currently lacks advanced features like ECG, sleep apnea detection, and temperature sensors, Apple may add some of these from the Series 10 lineup, especially as the Series 11 introduces even more sophisticated health tools.
