Apple began its transition from Intel processors to its in-house Apple Silicon in 2020, completing the shift by mid-2023. The company is now preparing to launch new Macs featuring its upcoming M5 chip later in 2025. Meanwhile, early details of future Apple Silicon chips expected in 2026 and 2027 have emerged online. Apple is reportedly developing its M6 chip, codenamed Komodo, which is expected to power Mac computers launching in 2026. This follows the upcoming release of the M5 chip, set to debut in late 2025 in next-generation MacBook Pro and iPad Pro models. The M6 chip will likely continue Apple’s tradition of annual processor upgrades as part of its Apple Silicon roadmap.

In addition to the M6, Apple is working on its seventh-generation M7 chip, internally referred to as Borneo. Based on the company’s typical release cadence, Macs featuring the M7 chip could be introduced in 2027. These developments suggest Apple is maintaining a steady, long-term chip development strategy aimed at keeping its hardware ecosystem tightly integrated and future-ready.

Another chip in the works, codenamed Sotra, is described as an “advanced Mac chip.” However, specific details about its capabilities or release timeline remain unclear. Its positioning in the lineup—whether as a high-end variant, a new architecture, or something else—is still speculative at this point.
Beyond consumer devices, Apple is also building custom chips for its AI servers, aiming to enhance its ability to handle remote AI processing. While many Apple Intelligence features will run locally on devices, the company plans to offload more complex tasks to servers powered by these new chips. This server project, called Baltra, is reportedly designed with significantly higher performance in mind—featuring up to eight times the CPU and GPU cores of the current M3 Ultra chip—and could be completed within the next few years.
