Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, claimed (yet again) that India will have roads like that of the United States of America. He quipped, “The question is not about the facelift; it has already changed. You have just watched the newsreel; the main picture is yet to begin.” He further claimed that some people from America find Indian infrastructure better than that of the states.
At 146,000 km, India has the second-largest road network in the world. Yet it is on 51st place on the Road Quality Index with Singapore on top of the leaderboard. Road safety is also a pressing issue in India, with 11.3 deaths per 100,000, averaging over 450 daily casualties, that is a death every freaking minute. Most of the Indian roads are some of the unsafest ones.

Reactions poured in with netizens taking a dig at the minister for parroting the same statement on repeat for ages now. BJP leader Subramaniyan Swamy jibed, “If Nitin Gadkari states so then it must truly happen. That is Nitin’s track record.” Several users shared the plight of Indian roads riddled with potholes, sinkholes and what not. Others shared how many times the minister made the same claim. “2022 mein 2024 ki deadline di thi,” reminded one user. Another user wrote, “2 years after which year?” “Agle saal phir do saal badh jaega,” quipped a third user. Yet another user asked, “Why this fascination with American infra? America is developed and infra built there years ago is deteriorating.”
One user commented,
it’s not the roads that need fixing , it’s the people driving on them. You can make highways like the US, but who’s upgrading the mindset of the people , who’s gonna teach them Basic Road Sense!!”
